his and her circumstances
Yukino Miyazawa is really, really vain, and loves to hear people praise her. She's always been the best at everything, and always tries to look perfect. But when Yukino goes to high school, she's finally upstaged--by Souichiro Arima, who scores better on the entrance exams and instantly snatches the attention of the class. By accident, Arima finds out that Yukino is just pretending, and this starts off a series of events that lead to Yukino and Arima falling in love. They then have to cope with a lot of obstacles in their relationship.
Yukino Miyazawa, the Queen of Vanity, is the 'perfect student' - smart, pretty, athletic and has an overall nice personality. What everyone in her school didn't know was that behind the perfect facade lies a different person. She is always the best in anything - but an obstacle comes her way. The obstacle's name is Souichirou Arima. Souichirou Arima is chosen as the representative of the freshmen, not Miyazawa. Thus, she strives hard to defeat him in all aspects. But a day comes when her most-hated enemy comes to find out her secret. From treating Arima as an enemy, friendship blossoms. Soon love comes. Kare Kano is a story that revolves all around the pangs and beauty of first love.

Pressure is high for Yukino Miyazawa to succeed, to be loved by all, and to be simply...the best. After working so hard to become the top student at her school, a new competitor has arrived to tumble her from her self made pedestal: Arima Souichirou. The instant she met him, she hated him. He topped her every effort without even trying. Now Yukino is putting her hard work into plotting her revenge, but was love part of the plan?
Characters
Yukino Miyazawa: Wants to be perfect at everything she achieves, and would have been if Arima wasn't so perfect in the eyes of others. Because of him, her flaws begin to shine through, and without realising it, she falls in love, allowing her true self to surface.
Arima Souichirou: Seemingly perfect, achives higher grades than Yukino, and without trying people love him. Even when Yukino tries to be mean to him, her is genuine, and even tells Yukino that he loves her. Of course he does hide a dark secret, that Yukino manages to discover.
Asaba Hideaki: Seriously into the female race, Asaba tries to get Arima to join him in opening Asaba Land. However Yukino tries to stop him, and the two start out as rivals. Of course this doesn't last long, and Asaba even hits Arima for hurting Yukino's feelings, and they begin to hang out together at school
Tsubasa Shibahime: An old friend of Arima's, she starts school late in the year due to a skating accident. She also has a crush on Arima, and because of Arima's love for Yukino, she hates Yukino instantly. Of course after Yukino snapped and attacked Tsubasa, they became firm friends
Maho Izawa: Hates Yukino at first (you notice that this happens to be a pattern...lol) because she knows that Yukino is being fake, yet still manages to steal the lime-light. Turns the girls in their class against yukino, but after this doesn't quite work in Maho's favor, the 2 become friends
Tsubaki Sakura: Although friends with Tsubasa, Tsubaki was nice to Yukino when they met. Kinda has a rival in Asaba, as they both have a liking for pretty girls (for the record, Tsubaki is a girl) and is the one to come up with the idea for a acting club
Aya Sawada: First friends with Rika and Tsubaki, Aya is a published writer. She becomes friends with Yukino, the group of friends, does become fastly larger
Rika Sena: Is the cheery friend of the group, and usally always has a smile present. Completes the group of friends, which include Yukino, Tsubasa, Maho, Tsubaki, Aya and Rika
